HUP at Select LA: don't come to Los Angeles if you want to party like it's 1999
Humans Unlocking Potential attended Southern California's premier International Trade event: Select LA. The summit was a gathering of global investors, meeting with business and government leaders from around Southern California. Select LA provides a platform for businesses seeking to secure foreign direct investment (FDI) opportunities and gain exclusive insights into market trends and deal flow throughout the Los Angeles region.
The two-day event started with an informal welcome reception at Red Bulls headquarters in Santa Monica and continued the next day with the Summit at JW Marriot in Downtown Los Angeles. World Trade Center LA president Stephen Cheung and his team hosted a range of speakers providing insights into the business climate in LA.
After the opening remarks, we attended a panel discussion between tech venture capitalists Chanch Xu (Upfront Ventures), Rick Smith (Crosscut Ventures), and Richard Jun (BAM Ventures), moderated by Eric Zabinski (O'Melveny). The topic of discussion was how Los Angeles is developing into a destination for international Tech Industry. Next up were two break out sessions. The session on Robotics focussed on how the intersection of IoT and manufacturing is transforming entire industries and their supply chains, while in the next room over a panel discussion discussed LA's $40 Billion Bioscience Industry and what it is doing to edge out competitors from around the world.
During lunch, we witnessed presentations about the future of LA investments, before keynote speaker Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong took the stage. In about half an hour he provided insight into how his company Nant Works, is working on implementing the Fourth Industrial Revolution, by converging the worlds of Biology, Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Technology, and Physics. Their goals are to take on catastrophic life-threatening diseases, climate change, and freedom of speech. Truly inspirational!
The afternoon continued with break out sessions. In the upcoming years, LA is taking on the Mobility revolution with a range of initiatives around the international airport, LA's harbor, and public transit. From Hyperloop’s vacuum pods to all-electric semi-trucks, LA is incubating a new mobility and transportation paradigm. Telling for the importance of improving transportation in the LA region was that China's leading electric vehicle manufacturer BYD won 2018's "Foreign Direct Investment Award".
Keynote Speaker, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, spoke about how Los Angeles will continue to be the city where everybody has the feeling that they belong. With LA being the capitol of Latin America and the gateway to Asia, the city will have it's doors open for the world. Together we can take on our differences and work on creating a much stronger world. One of the main reasons LA was awarded the Olympics of 2028 is that this is the city where people can do what they want to do and make their dreams come true. In the end it is human relationships that that make international business thrive.
With Mayor Garcetti and Select LA confirming HUP's believe in the human connection, we are looking forward to helping you navigate your business expansion into Southern California.
